The Fun, Joy, History and Mystery of my Jewelry Journey

About Jo Apri Treasures

Sharing my jewelry journey with you…

So years ago I started becoming very strangely interested in old paintings, and old objects, and vases and mysteries and histories of the past through objects!! This was a very fun and interesting hobby, but it also completely overwhelmed me at times too. Like, Oh How Neat I can feel and see the past in this object!!! And that sometimes turned into, Oh Shit I can feel and see the past in this object. Anyway…This is a long story, and after a failed attempt at appraisal school, perhaps worthy of a post another time, but somehow I landed upon my fascination – JEWELRY! I zeroed in. THIS IS IT. Maybe it woke up the hiding little kid in me to go off treasure hunting and have Fun! WHAT will i find today?? I must start off saying, no way, I am NO expert in jewelry! I have made soooooo many mistakes, good grief, where i thought I bought something AMAZING! But Alas, it was …. NOT. I wasted alot of money. But did I really? I dont think so. It was “school” really. Alot of freeking school of hard knocks. But it was so fun along the way, and jewelry became a way that I calmed my nervous system down. I am learning alot. Thank goodness for ALL the free resources online, just wonderful. I love buying books on jewelry and learning. Staring at those photos. Its kind of become an obsession, IYKYK! My goal is to become a part time reseller of fabulous jewelry, as I would love to have an entrepreneurial job where i am very Passionate about what im selling. I want to have FUN with it. However, i am still currently in the learning stages. I have worked very hard in my self study though. I would love to network with other beginner jewelry resellers and jewelry collectors. I also love learning from people that have been in the industry a long time, and hearing their perspective and experiences and expertise. I also would really love to encourage others to start a part time self created job, no matter how small, in an area they are obsessed about. Figure it out, as you go! Because your passion will drive you. If you are obsessed, YOU ALREADY KNOW ALOT! This obsession of jewelry sort of happened accidentally for me, and I guess, now Im hooked. I mean, literally, like 5 years ago I didnt even know actual gold was NOT magnetic. Nor did I know a thing about “markings”. Oh geez, the pieces i have PASSED OVER during my entire freeking life at thrift stores, rummages, etc. If I only knew. But when it Hit, It Hit. In addition to jewelry, I love to research other antiques, am a musician/singer/songwriter and a lover of animals as well. Honestly, my life is Music and Animals, but being an Artist and also a highly oversensitive Empath, my nervous system is a complete disaster! For some reason (luckily) Jewelry and Treasure hunting calms it down!!! I Think its the Fun Factor….

HOW I WORK

Work Process

01

LEARN LEARN LEARN

I check out many books at libraries about antique jewelry and DEVOUR them. I also look at thrift stores, book sales, etc to buy jewelry books. I watch countless youtube videos to learn about jewelry as well! Im so thankful to these creators putting out videos, im getting SUCH A fabulous education for free. Establish relationships in your local community-Always be learning!

02

MY GEAR

Before I go thrifting, rummaging, estate sales, etc, I always bring my STRONG magnets, Jewelers Loupe. At home I have my ACID TESTING KITS. (CAREFULLY Used and stored.) And Jewelry Cleaners. I have my compartmentalized containers, everything is labelled. Organization is KEY, so is keeping pieces safe from scratches, or losing them!

03

WHERE DO I SELL

I have sold some cool costume jewelry on Facebook marketplace, scrap gold to local coin shop, and a few special fine pieces to specialty jewelry store (if it fits with something they are interested in.) I have not started Ebay yet, or anywhere else yet, but I will soon! I feel stressed about it, but I have to start! New things are always scary, until they…arent. Keep your receipts very organized! you dont have to have the most fancy software, Excel is fine. Just keep track of everything to make things easier when you file taxes, even if you only make a small amount. You need a foundation and working system from the very start, to propel you forward.

Why Hello There…

Meet The Jo Apri Treasures TEAM

I have no employees…yet. Im having a hard enough time employing myself! But I have several friends that totally support what im trying to do, and have put up with me endlessly talking about Jewelry. I hope i can get them on “staff” one day. They all live in different regions, and I would LOVE to see what jewelry they find perusing THEIR area of the world!!!! So interesting to me!
